Wind Chimes

In their Design and Technology, Year 3/4 investigated various different types of wind chimes and the materials that are used to make them. First, the children looked carefully at each wind chime to find out how it was made, what materials were used and the sound that it made.

Next, the children had the chance to investigate the materials further. This time  they experimented with lots of different items such as: shells, rice, plastic, wood and metal to see what sound they would produce. The children thought about which would be best to include in a real wind chime to fit its purpose. After that, they practised attaching the materials together. The children had to make sure the joins were strong as well as looking attractive.

Then, the children moved onto designing their own wind chime. They also wanted to add recycling materials into their chimes so used plastic bottles which the children coloured and melted (very carefully) and hole punched it so that they could attach it to their design.

The children cut our wood to size carefully measuring to make sure it was the right size. They then added all of our decorations including bells, beads, bamboo tubes and melted plastic, attaching them with hammer and nails. The children were very pleased with the finished result when they evaluated them. We hope you like them too!
