Plymouth STEM Conference
In July 2019, High View children joined POGO at the Plymouth STEM Conference. The POGO Scientific Coordinator and Communications Officer 'Skyped' scientists on board the Polarstern Research ship.
Our children had taken part in a design competition where they decorated polystyrene foam cups. These cups were sent on the expedition and used in a demonstration of deep ocean pressure.
Congratulations to these fantastic young ladies who designed the winning cups as part of the POGO ocean project. Look what happened to our cups. They have shrunk and been crushed!!! This is caused by the pressure of the ocean at a depth of 3.5 km.
We also took part in the Plymouth Big Splash interactive STEM event where we met staff from POGO and Plymouth Marine Laboratory. The children investigated the effects of deep ocean pressure using marshmallows and syringes, investigated algae/seaweed and plankton samples through a microscope. Our children also took on the challenge of being deep sea divers, repairing pipes in the dark, murky waters with the STEM Hub.
