Foundation Stage Ice Investigations

The children noticed that when put into the freezer, the water in the ice cube trays turned into ice cubes. When asked why, "It's because it (the freezer) is really really REALLY cold."

The children tried to use the cubes to build towers but noticed that they were "too slippery" and were hard to stack on top of each other.  The children then noticed the ice cubes were getting smaller, when asked why "My hands are melting it. They are warm!"

The children were then challenged to predict what they thought might happen to the ice cube if we put it under a running tap. The majority of children predicted  the water would 'melt' the ice.

The children also discovered that they could make different size, shaped and coloured 'ice blocks' but the results were the same. Some of the children noticed that the larger the 'ice block' the longer it took to melt and the smaller the 'ice block' the faster the ice melted.

Great investigating Foundation Stage!
