Egyptian Jewellery Pouches

In Year 3/4, the children were challenged to create their own Egyptian jewellery pouches. The purpose of the pouch was for rich Egyptians and Pharaohs take their precious stones, amulets and jewellery with them to the afterlife. They needed to be able to be sealed securely and also look appealing.

Initially, the children looked at existing designs of purses to get an idea for their own pouches, they used these to create 4 design ideas. Then, the children learnt 4 new stitches, blanket stitch, running stitch, over stitch and back stitch. They had to make sure each stitch was equal so it secured their fabric and looked presentable. The children learned that each stitch has its own purpose. Some stitches are used for decoration, some are used on fraying materials and others are better for securing material tightly.

The children chose which stitch they wanted and then began to create their pouch.  They had to create a template, cut their fabric and sew it very carefully. Finally, the children were able to add the finishing touches of decorations, gems, fabric and drawstrings. They then evaluated our designs to judge whether they were fit for purpose and appealed to the target market. I'm sure you'll agree that they all look fabulous and any Pharaoh would be proud to own one!
