Cadover Bridge Field Trip
Year 5/6 enjoyed a trip Cadover Bridge, to become 'real geographers' for the day. We were fortunate enough to be accompanied on this trip by Miss Blampier (a Geography teacher from Lipson Co-operative Academy). With her knowledge and expertise, the children were able to carry out several activities in order to answer our geographical enquiry on how rivers change as they move downstream. Their experiences on this trip could be described as 'a trip of two halves!' The poor Year 6s were fortunate not to be washed downstream, with all the rain that fell on Thursday, however the Year 5s had a very different experience as the sun made an appearance on the Friday! With real-life opportunities to measure the width and depth of the river, along with water velocity and a study of pebble shape and size, the children really did gain some valuable knowledge as a result of this trip; with all children thoroughly enjoying the experience.
To further their understanding of rivers, year 5/ 6 investigated how the River Plym changes. Wading into the River Plym at Cadover Bridge and further upstream at Blacka Brook (a tributary), the children used many different pieces of equipment to measure the river speed, width, depth, pebble size and pebble roundness in order to compare between the two locations on the river's course.
Displayed below, are a range of the children's pre-trip predictions, results graphs and post-trip conclusions, along with an example of the equipment they used throughout their fieldwork.
We are sure you will agree, they were all super geographers.
